A Heavenly Rocking Chair
A day with two infants plus a 2, 3, 4, and 5 year old demonstrated how much comforting goes into a day of raising children. A very old memory flashed through my being. For a moment, I remembered curling up on my mother’s lap in her cozy rocking chair with it’s comforting creak. I don’t remember any of the reasons I needed comforting, but I do remember one or the other of my parents consoling me in that chair. When I dismantled the house to move my widowed mother, chunks of exposed stuffing along the front gave witness to a lot of use. That chair was a go-to place when the trials of life were too much for this little girl—maybe not so little. I also remember times when my legs, almost too long for lap sitting, dangled down to the floor. Creak, creak, creak. That sound was part of the comfort. The sound made me smile when I turned over the comforting chair to our son’s family.
What’s our go-to place when life seems too much for us as “grownups”? We can count on life to bring times when we need comfort, and the old creaking rocking chair doesn’t cut it—even if it were available. We can curl up and nap, walk, talk or cry, but our biggest help is always available. God is as close as an inner whisper. Just as a small child tugs on his mother’s skirt when upset, when we marshal our inner being to reach out to Him even in a tiny way, He will rock us in His love. The creak of His comfort is ours for the asking. We are never too old, or too sophisticated, or too anything to ask and receive from our loving God. God help us remember to run to You in times of trouble. Let’s celebrate the beginning of 2017 by whispering for His presence to rock us throughout the year.
