Birds in Snow

Mary’s Monday Musings to Quilt Encouragement

Birds in Snow

A lot of snow is unusual in Eastern Virginia. Blizzards are something we read about more than experience. Unwilling to subject our car to slipping around in the deep-for-us snow, and thankful for weather people who gave us ample warning to prepare, we settled down to ride out the almost twenty-four hour snow-fall and it’s beautiful, if confining aftermath. Along with the stocking up on supplies, we remembered to bring in a supply of birdseed. A deep blanket of snow makes scratching around for food difficult for the tiny creatures. What we didn’t calculate on was becoming the five star restaurant of the neighborhood. I’d like to know just how the word gets around in birdland that a particular yard has a filled bird feeder. What a delight to watch them. What hardy, diligent creatures birds are! They braved our temperatures in the teens and swarmed around our feeder. When the crowd was too much, they stood underneath on our cold snow to tirelessly pecked the ground for the seed that fell as the others ate.

They made me think. At any time, I would do well to flock to my church to feed on the fellowship there and to eat of the spiritual inspiration available as well and most especially in times of a personal blizzard. Instead of shivering alone in the misery of circumstances when the storms of life come howling in, we can imitate the birds and flock together with others to and nourish ourselves, to warm and feed one another with the insights God gives His people.
