Great Big Silvery Moon

Do you remember the children’s song?  “Oh Mister Moon, Moon, Great Big Silvery Moon won’t you please shine down on me?” The moon recently shone down on us for a long evening of driving across several states.  There in the sky, long before dark, the moon hung, magnificent above miles, of beautiful green trees. It shone its light over us for hours. It was a lovely, peaceful sight shining over our travels. We could imagine how welcome such a clear moon-lit night would have been to a traveler in ancient days before autos, artificial lights, or road signs. The evening was bright with its light. Its consistency was comforting although we had maps and voices on our phones also directing our path. The moon represented a power beyond ourselves: a beauty beyond our making, a power beyond our understanding or control.

We benefit from taking time to recognize that our modern civilization with all its wonders of gadgets, inventions, and ideas is not enough for the human soul. We gain an eternal, uplifting, and encouraging insight when we perceive that we humans are not the almighty powers we might like to think we are. When we look at nature and see the unbelievable beauty, the eye-popping grandeur of God’s creation, we are humbled, yet at the same time enlightened by the splendor of our God and His tender provision of our earth for human beings. He provides for us, even us who are imperfect, sometimes arrogant, sometimes timid human beings. We are reassured when we recognize the power, the magnificence of our Heavenly Father along with His astonishing desire to relate to His human creations–US.
