The New “Cake Table” for Weddings

I’m not sure what drives the trend of substituting doughnuts for cake at weddings, but we’ve been to several where an abundant number and variety of doughnuts were attractively displayed for the wedding guests. A very small cake for the bride and groom to cut supplied the traditional wedding picture. Perhaps large quantities of doughnuts cost less than an elaborately decorated cake large enough for a hundred guests. Or maybe the bride and groom enjoy doughnuts more than cake. Possibly leftover doughnuts are easier to dispose of than leftover cake. Regardless, cake or doughnuts, we enjoy indulging our sweet tooth at a wedding. A wedding is such a joyous occasion, we feel privileged to be invited to share this important transition in two peoples’ lives. Weddings which reflect the couple’s personalities and still embrace some of the centuries old symbolic aspects are so special. Be it exchanging rings, friends to stand in support of the couple’s intentions, flowers enhancing the setting, or music to accompany the walk down the aisle, none of that is essential to the legality of the wedding. Yet, the traditions make a memorable occasion where people can rejoice in the sealing of the couple’s life-changing decision.

God ordains marriage. It doesn’t matter how fancy the wedding.  It doesn’t matter which customs are observed. He alone, knows the tender intentions of the bride and groom toward one another. He alone knows their abilities to live up to their intentions. Best of all, He alone is the best source of help to strengthen the couples’ resolve whenever the way becomes hard or the best intentions falter. While the guests enjoy the sweets at a wedding and the sweetness of the couple’s intent, each wedding guest can contribute a mighty gift to the couple by praying earnestly for God to reinforce the bride and groom’s loving intentions toward one another and daily strengthen their resolves to built one another up.
