Mothers
A recent newspaper article addressed the trend of today’s young generation who have arrived at the stage of life when childbearing has been a standard expectation. Many of these young people tell pollsters they never plan to have children. Or at least plan to delay parenthood for a long time until they are well established in a great career. To each his or her own plans, but on Mother’s Day, I can address the amazing rewards of motherhood. It’s hard to explain just how becoming a mother changes a women’s perspective. It is truly amazing what a great love develops when that little, totally dependent baby is placed in the new mom’s arms. A mother quickly learns to put someone else’s interest ahead of her own. And it isn’t even a great sacrifice. It is astounding how holding the miracle of a little helpless baby right after birth changes everything. There are no doubt exceptions, but something remarkable happens that leads to a great growth in responsibility as well as a leap in a mom’s capacity to love.
Despite fatigue and sacrifices, the exchange of love between a mother and her baby stretches a woman and draws out of her qualities that surprise and bless her. The love that develops for her child causes changes and growth all the days of a mother’s life. Motherhood helps a woman’s insight into her relationship with her God. He is our divine Heavenly Father and it is safe to say that we all sometimes disappoint our Heavenly Father, but His love never lagged for us. Call upon this love to help us grow in our love for Him and our children.
