Taffeta Memories and Fresh Yeast Rolls
Even today, the smell of taffeta takes me back to my role as a five-year-old flower girl in my aunt’s wedding. I wore a yellow taffeta dress with ruffles to the floor. I was so distracted by the crowded church, I forgot to toss the petals in my basket onto the floor. When I passed my father, who sat on the end of a row halfway down the sanctuary, he whispered, “Throw the petals.” I still remember the flash of regret that I had missed leaving half the trail I was supposed to, but the swish, swish sound, and the unique smell of my dress plus lots of praise from the guests overcame any chagrin. I still enjoy the memory of wearing that dress for the wedding. I think I was allowed to dress up in it later.
Whatever the reason, smell can induce some strong memories. My husband says the smell of yeast rolls fresh from the oven brings back some treasured memories of Saturday night family gatherings at his childhood home. His boyish memory interpreted that the people were drawn by the allure of hot yeast rolls. I’ve read that smells can be powerful triggers for our memories.
Weddings are intended to create happy memories, especially the memories of the bride and groom. Family gatherings for any reason can create happy memories. Good memories make powerful, positive contributions to our sense of well-being. A reservoir of happy memories is a valuable resource for our outlook on life. With intentional mindfulness, let’s make a point of creating good memories for the generations following us. We can discipline ourselves to ensure pleasant family memories for gatherings by keeping the conversations positive, avoiding controversial subjects; and, yes, provide some lovely, scented candles and yummy smelling foods. Ask God to help us build wonderful memories in other’s lives.
