A Privilege
Mary’s Monday Musings to Quilt Encouragement
A Privilege
What fun to celebrate a person’s birthday! Birthdays are one thing everybody has in common. We all have them. Whenever we have the opportunity to gather around someone and observe their birthday together, we can count it a privilege and go to whatever lengths possible to attend and honor that person. We celebrate a child’s birthday because we know it helps their young minds recognize that we are glad they were born. Is the need to know one’s life matters to others only a child’s need? No. It’s human nature to need reassurance that your individual life is significant. We thrive on confirmation from others that our existence on earth matters.
I’m guessing God smiles at any effort to note a person’s birthday. From a hug to a card, from a telephone call to a luncheon date, any recognition of a birthday carries a blessing. One never knows the full extent another person needs validation of their worth. Every person is a creation of God whether or not they acknowledge that fact. Worth isn’t based on magnitude of accomplishments, scope of influence, or wealth and status. Every individual carries an element of worth simply because God gave them life. Who knows just what gesture might open a person’s eyes to God’s love for them? No one knows the plans God has for others. Often, we don’t know when we have had the privilege of dropping the seed of God’s love into a ready heart. We may not suspect the seed landed in the soil of need. There’s something about an adult’s birthday that breeds introspection. People all experience moments of needing the reassurance their life is worthwhile. Seize the privilege to liberally scatter birthday blessings. You have no idea what God will reap from your seed.
