A Warm Coat
The winter coat I wear on the coldest days garners a lot of compliments. It’s not only warm, it even looks warm. Passersby comment on it. Two layers of short piled fabric are stitched together to form a coat. It’s like wearing two blankets off my bed. I only wish it was a little longer so it supplied it’s warmth further down my legs when the wind blusters. I’ve worn it a lot of years, but it is holding up well so far. The weakest point of its construction is the buttonholes. If they were to stretch out so they fail to keep the coat closed around me, the garment would lose its warming effect.
Wouldn’t it be great if we could wrap each other in warm comfort on the days when the cold winds of life’s trials bluster around us? Perhaps, in a sense, we can. God, help us detect when cold winds are whipping through someone’s life. Help us wrap that person in the warmth that someone cares about the storm they are experiencing. Help us be a buttonhole that keeps the warm coat of love securely in place during the cold blast of trials. Show us how to best warm their hearts and give us the strength to follow through in word and actions. Give us the endurance to warm people long term if necessary.
