Mary’s Monday Musings to Quilt Encouragement
Amazing bands

Instrumental bands bring delight. Military musical bands inspire and leave us tapping our feet. We love to see the coordination and skill of a large group of musicians marching in step at the same time they play music in perfect unison. At the 2022 Tattoo* concert, bands from multiple countries came together to play stirring patriotic songs from their various nations. One band came from the Netherlands and amazed the audience by playing their instruments in perfect union at the same time they rode a bicycle in changing formations. Our eyes bulged in astonishment at the simultaneous mastery of bike and instrument. Countless hours of practice went into such an amazing performance. I wonder who thought up the idea of playing an instrument while riding a bike. (Maybe this is a good time for that old admonishment we used to see on TV, “Don’t try this at home” and risk broken instruments, bikes or body parts.)

What are we trying to mingle in our private, professional, or business lives that feels impossible to combine all at once? What a challenge when our responsibilities demand us to master differing skills which requires new learning and competing proficiencies. We can easily recognize it requires lots of practice, so we can rearrange our schedules to provide more time to learn new ways. We can approach others who have insights into the new talents we need to acquire. Most important, we can consult God. Is this what we need to learn? Does it contribute to our life goals and other needs such as our ability to earn? Is this something God wants for a person to accomplish? Combining skills is something God can enable us to achieve if it blends with His design for our lives. He knows exactly what He wants you to achieve so that you can impart joy, delight, and the enjoyment of something that stirs the soul.

*The word tattoo evolved from the words in a foreign language calling for the playing of taps that told 17th and 18th century regiments of fifes and drums to return to their barracks.
