Mary’s Monday Musings to Quilt Encouragement
Amazing Slides
Children lined up over and over again to experience this wonderful outdoor slide. Securely held on a loving lap, even the little ones could enjoy the thrill of a long, delightful slide. It had just the right pitch to thrill, but not terrify. Smiles lit up the faces of children who eagerly grabbed their burlap ride bag and scrabbled up the slope to repeat the adventure. Someone mighty clever thought up the idea to arrange straw and plastic in such a way to provide a safe way to give dozens of children and their parents lots of entertainment. To this pair of great-grandparents positioned at the end of the slides, the little faces wreathed with utter delight that landed near us were way more than enough reward for watching in the hot sun. Our smiles were as wide as the children’s as we cheered them on to scramble up the hill and repeat the thrill. We clapped when the more timid eagerly ran back up to slide again.
We will treasure those memories as long as we live. I suspect we experienced a teensy weensy bit of God’s reactions when he looks down on our moments of recreation. Contrary to some opinions, I imagine He likes to see us enjoy relaxation from our labors. He knows better than we that we require moments of respite from our responsibilities. He knows good times enjoyed together make the bonds of relationships tighter and stronger. A shared laugh, a collective experience knits hearts together. If we make opportunities for these times of healthy, wholesome pastimes in our families and friendships, we will be more able to endure the hard times and overcome our differences. God knows how to meld us together. Select wholesome activities and enjoy them with gladness.
