Birds of a Feather

Birds of a Feather
There’s something endearing about seeing a group of the same species of birds lined up together. This look-alike row of birds preened their feathers while perched on a railing at a large Florida pier. They weren’t leery of us and allowed us to approach pretty close before they began to make uncomfortable movements. Perhaps they had learned to anticipate some delicious crumbs thrown their way. We enjoyed our close view of how much alike their interesting feather patterns looked.
People have the same propensity to hang out with people with the same ideas, interests or values we hold. There’s pleasure in being with people like us. Nothing wrong with that, but there’s reward in expanding the nature of our contacts. We expand our knowledge and understanding to spend time with people with different interests. It benefits us to reach out to people who don’t look like us or think exactly like us. We grow in our awareness of the reasons behind various viewpoints. We gain new compassion and perception. We already know this, but habits and life-long patterns are hard to change. Let’s ask God to supply us with opportunities to befriend others who aren’t birds of a feather.
