Mary’s Monday Musings to Quilt Encouragement
Buzzards
I rounded the corner of a neighborhood to see three enormous birds in the street. At first I thought they were turkeys, they were so large. But as I drove closer, I could see they were turkey buzzards with bright red on their heads. A dead squirrel was their focal point. They flapped their long wings before one of them took possession of the prey and flapped his way to the side of the road. The other two leisurely watched in no hurry to get out of the way of my approaching car. The birds weren’t pretty and certainly their meal was unappealing. But these birds, as unattractive as they appear, are powerful creatures and perform the important task of cleaning up dead things including road kill. They perform their God given purpose and fill their bellies as a result.
Are we willing to perform the role of cleaning up the unattractive emotional road kill that life has left in some people’s thinking and manners? God needs people who can obey the call to help people whose attitudes cripple them and make them vulnerable to the vultures of our society. Instead of a beak—a mouth in our case—to pick apart our prey, let’s ask God to give us a heart and tongue of compassion that is open to hear how to convey His love to hurting people.
