Christmas Gatherings
Mary’s Monday Musings to Quilt Encouragement
Christmas Gatherings
“You didn’t know what we did during World War 11…” The two brothers burst into laughter, interrupting their story until they could catch their breath and talk over their mirth. In the middle of Christmas dinner the family stopped, forks held mid-air, waiting for them to collect themselves. Phil finally caught his breath. “Remember the food rationing? Remember how hard it was to make the butter coupons cover all we needed? I came into the kitchen and our dog was on the kitchen table licking a stick of butter. Ned and I knew Mom would be furious.”
“He didn’t!” Even 20 years later, Mom was horrified.
“I knew you would be mad.” Ned chuckled and continued. “Mad enough to ban the dog from indoors. Phil picked up the dog off the table and put her outdoors. I grabbed a table knife and smoothed the butter until it looked like a perfect stick with no evidence of dog licking.”
“You didn’t,” Mom repeated, her face a comical mixture of horror and amusement.
“We did and you never guessed.”
Everyone had to put their forks down they laughed so hard. The surprise on Mom and Dad’s faces was as funny as the story. Mom and Dad joined the laughter. Memories and family stories, even often told stories, go well with passing the gravy and munching roasted turkey. Rehearsing well beloved stories of previous escapades creates close bonds. Mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie interspersed with family history and shared escapades tightens bonds.
Families all over our nation are planning family get-togethers to celebrate Christmas. What a delightful custom. Games, conversations, shared meals form the atmosphere for heart felt communication and remind every one of the love and history they share. Focusing on what unites us and minimizing whatever might divide us or create rancor or arguments creates delightful fellowship which makes for memories that unite our hearts. Ask God to bless your family gatherings with increased appreciation for family and help to make the ties strong and permanent.
