Mary’s Monday Musings to Quilt Encouragement
Decorations
How enjoyable to see the beautiful ways people adorn their homes for Christmas. Because we traveled long distances to grandchildren graduations for the last three Decembers, we curtailed decorating to almost nothing. This year, I’m enjoying doing some Christmas decorating. Some well used items are on fond display. The creche scene was the one decoration that made it out of its box each year in spite of our travels. It was a gift from my mother-in-law, probably a sacrificial gift. I think she would have dearly loved to have such a nice set but gave it to me instead. It’s a little worse for the years of children enjoying it. The angel’s wing is missing its tip. One cow’s horn is broken, and Mother Mary’s hand has disappeared, but the scene still proclaims the reason we are celebrating this December. Jesus left Heaven to come to earth in the form of a helpless baby.
Sam Storms wrote this description of the birth of Jesus in the 1900’s. “He was conceived by the union of divine grace and human disgrace. The King of Kings sleeping in a cow-pen. The Creator of oceans and seas and rivers afloat in the womb of his mother. God sucking his thumb. The Alpha and Omega learning his ABC’s. He who was once surrounded by the glorious stereophonic praise of adoring angels now hears the lowing of cattle, the bleating of sheep, the stammering of bewildered shepherds. He who spoke the universe into being now coos and cries. Omniscient Deity counting his toes. From the robes of eternal glory to the rags of swaddling clothes. The omnipresent spirit, whose being fills the galaxies, confined to the womb of a peasant girl. Infinite power learning to crawl.” The reason for Christmas is to celebrate the miraculous wonder of God revealing His amazing love by coming to earth as a baby. An amazing reason to celebrate. As the song says, “God tell it on the mountain.”
