Easter Fun
The celebration of the resurrection of Jesus brings us abounding joy. Thinking about God’s actions on that long ago first Easter takes our breath away and opens our hearts to ponder our amazing God and his wonderful promises. Our spiritual gladness creates delightful customs full of fun to express our happiness. Easter eggs are one way to express our delight. In 1814 when James Madison was President, his wife, Dolley, began the custom of inviting children to roll hard boiled eggs on the grounds of the Capital building in celebration of Easter. Later when the grounds were refurbished, the Easter egg roll was changed to the White House Lawn. The annual event brings much delight to families who come from far and wide to enjoy the fun. This year, thousands of children hunted eggs, dyed eggs, decorated egg shaped cookies as well as rolling eggs with wooden spoons. Families dressed respectfully to reflect the privileges of celebrating on the South lawn of the White House and of enjoying a close-up view of the President’s home as well as glimpse of the nation’s President when he made an appearance.
The resurrection of Christ brings great celebration. For centuries, people have faithfully rejoiced over God’s astounding event. Smiles and laughter flow from the delight of man’s relationship with the God of our universe. From the days of the Old Testament, festivities followed man’s revelation of God. Today, in the light of the New Testament, when we glimpse His love, His mercy, and His grace towards us, we often express our amazement and delight in long established traditions. When He sees our hearts of gratitude and the rejoicing which lies behind these customs, I think He enjoys the love and thankfulness our celebrations represent. God, help us to maintain hearts full of love for You in every tradition of celebration.
