Mary’s Monday Musings to Quilt Encouragement

Eyes

A look into the eyes of someone can provide clues into that person’s mood of the moment and perhaps even reveal hints of heartaches or joys of the past. Sometimes, I wonder what it was like to have lived when Jesus walked the earth. Imagine the experience of looking into His eyes. Or, Yikes, Jesus looking into mine or yours. What would He see? What would we see? I’ve read accounts of people seeing Jesus in a dream or a vision. The person always mentions the love they saw in the eyes of Jesus. Penetrating is another word we hear used to describe how Jesus eyes look. We have artists renderings of Jesus on canvas, and some of those pictures are riveting. Yet, I doubt we can totally replicate what the eyes of Jesus reflect. Could there be grief over the condition of the world or pain when we lose a loved one. Perhaps His eyes are challenging when He would like to see us pursue different thoughts or actions? Would there be twinkling eyes when He’s amused? Do His eyes sparkle with delight when He observes a great accomplishment or a kind deed?

Assuredly, He cares about what our eyes reflect, how our emotions are enhancing our lives or roiling them in turmoil. Does he sometimes see evasion in my eyes when I’m trying to ignore some service He’d like me to undertake? I hope He doesn’t see anger very often, but the Bible records His anger when he overturned the tables of money charged for sacrifices in the temple. So, there are justified times of anger, but we need to mentally look for His eyes in our mind’s eye before we act upon our own anger. Perhaps there’s a tip here. When our emotions, our reactions, or our feelings run high, lets close our eyes a moment and imagine the face of Jesus looking into our faces. What kind of guidance would be in a momentary picture of the eyes of Jesus? In this often-bewildering world, trying to emulate the love of Jesus can challenge us. The more we communicate with Him, the more we grow in our relationship with Him, the more we pray to reflect Him, the more we will show His love in what we say and do.
