Freedom
Mary’s Monday Musings to Quilt Encouragement
Freedom
I hope everyone enjoyed the 4th of July. This wonderful holiday offers a time to get together with family to enjoy a picnic, perhaps a swim, maybe a hike or fireworks. In all our activities, it’s good to take time to meditate on freedom. First of all remember the sacrifices of the Revolutionary War that allowed our nation freedom. Remember the subsequent sacrifices that allowed us to keep our freedoms. In this season of our nation, we would be wise to muse about what freedom should not mean in our beloved country. It doesn’t mean we should use it to revile people with slander, profanity, or libel. It doesn’t mean we are free to drive without regard to the safely of other drivers. It doesn’t mean freedom to destroy other people’s property or harm them physically. It doesn’t mean we can threaten people. It doesn’t mean we always agree. The freedom to debate our differences with civility and respect protects our way of life. Freedom will not survive intimidation or hooliganism.
God look upon our nation with its diverse population and bring us together in mutual respect. Help us subdue our baser nature and use self-control to express our differences with civility. Please help us respect one another’s right to their opinions even when we disagree. Expose untruths and deceit and bring clarity to muddled thinking. Help us maintain the precious freedom won at such a cost. Unite our nation around our core beliefs of Freedom, Independence, and Respect. Give us the gift of Divine Love to conquer our ignoble, coarser instincts.
