Get Along
Mary’s Monday Musings to Quilt Encouragement
Get Along
Children are born with a resilience that we adults would do well to emulate. A playground squabble that results in tears and anger can be put aside, and the children come together to enjoy one another without giving it another thought. It’s fun to see how excited our great grandchildren are at the prospect that one family or another will travel so they can see one another again, yet these anticipated visits are dotted with discord here and there over a toy, a shove, hurt feelings. Sometimes these are teachable moments; but at all times, they are overcome, and the play goes on. The sight of children sitting companionably together warms our hearts.
When I was growing up, I remember when my choice of words or tone of voice was argumentative my Dad would say, “Get along girls, get along.” I imagine God likes harmony among us as much as we grownups like harmony among our children. We profit whenever we can overcome any angst we feel because of friends and family members. We have an advantage over the children. We understand Who can help us choose to forgive and forget the offenses, and we know exactly where our Source of help lies. He is ready and willing to help us forgive and substitute love for every negative emotion. Let the little children lead us. The New Year is the perfect time to put down our offenses. Ignore the aggravations others can provide and concentrate on what we can enjoy together. Easier said than done! But the harder it is, the greater the rewards of accomplishing it. Scripture tells us that with God all things are possible. Forgiveness and overlooking each other’s flaws is a great way to begin the new year.
