Go the Extra Mile

Going the Extra Mile
Have you ever been on the receiving end of someone going the extra mile? This week was a glorious example. My cousin’s daughter didn’t go a few extra miles. She drove 320 some miles round trip in one day to bring her parents to us to give us time for a marvelous visit. Many smiles, laughs and much exchange of family news later, we said goodbye full of love and appreciation for close family ties. A life time of shared history fosters a deep love that translates into a kind of love and caring that produces a great blessing.
When I start thinking about it, I’ve been the beneficiary of lots of lots of people who went the extra mile. Maybe the extra wasn’t as dramatic as a long drive, but significant regardless. Repairmen have thrown in an extra repair without charge. A painter cut his fee to fit our budget. Some anonymous person picked up our bill when we ate in a restaurant. How can one adequately thank a person who has done more than is expected or required? Of course, we can make sure we speak a profuse and sincere thank you if we know who to thank. Other ideas? A written note that recognizes the extra mile makes sure the kind gesture was noticed. Best of all would be to pray for the persons. If we know them, we can lift the extra miler’s needs and desires in prayer. If we don’t know, we can still bring the people before the throne of God in prayer for his touch on their lives, and their relationship with Him. Of course, we can stay alert for our opportunities to go the extra mile ourselves and cause smiling faces.
