More than Valentine Love
February is a time to celebrate romantic love, but true agape love takes many other inspiring forms and is available to everyone. A long time ago, our family gathered for one of our granddaughter’s birthdays She opened a present to find a gorgeous doll in a lovely dress, a dream gift for any small girl. Her three year old little sister sat next to her. Instead of her little sister pouting or grabbing for the treasure, this unselfish child modeled a spectacular facet of love. She was glad for her sister. A smile lit her face spreading delighted sparkles to her eyes. Her whole demeanor reflected true joy for her sister to receive such an special gift. Even an adult can feel a twinge of envy when faced with someone else’s good fortune, although we can usually at least muster up a show of pleasure despite our feelings. But this little girl was too young for a show. She genuinely rejoiced for her big sister. Ah, a little child shall led them.
When we ask, God can change our natural responses. Instead of the normal response of our carnal nature, God can help us experience gladness for other people’s victories, their achievements, and their blessings. Our loving responses bring glory to God and reflect His love. Ask for the blessing of gladness for others’ good fortune, a characteristic of love.
