Not a Hallmark Christmas
Mary’s Monday Musings to Quilt Encouragement
Not a Hallmark Christmas.
Well, our Christmas Day, 2015 certainly will not grace the front of a Hallmark card. Because I did it early, the Christmas tree was up, small though it was. Nowhere else did boughs of holly, wreaths or bells pronounce a Fa-la-la-la-la over the season. Certainly not our voices as cracked as they were with congestion and dry coughs, symptoms of nasty colds. We made a few pretensions toward a meal, but even a rotisserie chicken did not arouse the interest of our taste buds. We read some scripture that our minds could not concentrate on. We dozed through a Hallmark movie. Guess the guy won the girl, not at all sure.
Our joyful report testifies that the spirit of Christmas does not depend on the trappings of Christmas. The love of Christ was in our home. The story of Jesus enduring a brutal flogging for our healing became central to our prayers to get well. The kindness of our daughter who brought soup over reflected God’s love. Not a creature was stirring as far as our next door neighbors could tell. Their concern prompted a phone call to inquire if we were all right which lifted our spirits. This all combined with gratitude that because of job conflicts with December 25 we had experienced the love of family on December 23rd when we gathered with one branch of our family for laughter, love, and the celebration of the birth of Jesus. It didn’t matter what day it was. History is not at all definite about the precise day. What matters is that because the Christ was born, because he suffered and died for us, our lives here on earth are anchored in God’s love. John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him would not perish, but have everlasting life.
