Our Thought Life
Mary’s Monday Musing to Quilt Encouragement
Our Thought Life
“Thanks, Dad, for the deep bargain on these avocados.”
I looked across the grocery store tomato display to see who was speaking. A lady, wearing her hair in a stylish top knot, bent over to pick up a bag of avocados, but no one else stood with earshot—certainly no one who she could be calling Dad.
The woman wheeled her cart toward the tomato display, and pointed to the ceiling. “Ah, thank You, Father for another sale. Looks like we’ll have guacamole tonight.” She paid no attention to me, but she had my attention as I concluded that she was talking to her Heavenly Father about His provision to bolster her dinner. I had flung a prayer toward God about my grocery shopping before I left home, but I hadn’t thanked him for the bargains I had found. Inside my mind, I thanked Him now. I smiled toward the lady with the avocados as I wheeled past her, grateful for her example.
As our day unfolds, how often do we think about God? Does it require a crisis or an emergency to turn our thoughts to God? What do we think about over and over again in the course of a day? Many thoughts go towards our family and friends. Lots of thinking is directed toward the work or tasks our days require. How many times do we turn those thoughts into mental conversations with God about family or the tasks we must accomplish? How often does He pop into our thoughts? The lady made me think of the scripture in Thessalonians 5:17,18 ‘Pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.’
Our days are more peaceful when our minds are so focused on God that we automatically make Him a part of our waking thoughts. When we develop the habit of consulting Him with our mundane routines as well as those alarming times that shake our world, our hearts become more in tune with His will and His peace more available. Our trust grows so that He becomes our first resource for those knotty, life problems as well as ordinary decisions. God, help us grow more consistently aware of You every moment of every day of our lives.
