I am amazed at the power of certain choruses. How can singing words that reflect the spirit of the scriptures to a simple tune bring peace as soon as they leave my mouth? Somehow, beyond human understanding, a simple song containing Bible concepts can change the turmoil of our hearts. In the midst of alarming news, fearful situations, scary scenarios the comfort of songs buried deep in in our memory can surface to bring rest to our souls. Some songs carry an anointing from the power of God which lifts us up beyond the reach of our circumstances. One such song contains the words, “Sweep over my soul, sweet spirit.” Further in the song it declares, “My rest is complete as I sit at Your feet.” And wham! There it is. Rest from the churning of the mind, from the anguish of the soul, from the fears that threaten to overwhelm. That peace that passes understanding is within reach, just as the Bible says.

In the ordinary times, on regular days, feed your heart with the choruses of God. They are recorded in hymnals, on tapes from church services, on recordings of dedicated Christians. Sing them in the good times to store them in your subconscious for a later time of need. Deposit them intentionally in order to feed on them when the world turns upside down. Different choruses will speak to different people. Repeat the ones that touch your heart until they are planted in your memory to be withdrawn when your needs swell large. Then sing them until you glimpse that peace that passes understanding.
