Mary’s Monday Musings to Quilt Encouragement

Remembering Ancestors

The brass plaque was my great grandmother’s license to practice Midwifery in Belgium. The small cast iron stove was a toy shared by my mother and her 5 sisters. The unhappy little boy was my uncle who didn’t look like he wanted to be photographed in the dandy outfit. One after another my extended family searched attics and boxes for family treasures to copy or photograph for a book of family history my cousin is compiling. We unearthed letters from ancestors which recorded grief, normal life, and triumphs. My talented cousin is preparing a book to document important events, preserve fading pictures of long ago relatives, and keep a picture record of family treasures.

Just as we are interested in learning details of the lives of our forefathers, God is interested in the details concerning His people. Our family has unearthed records which honor the lives of those who went before us. The Old Testament records meticulous details demonstrating that God is interested in particulars. The realization that God cared about long ago details reassures us that He cares about our personal lives. We may not understand the way He is working in our lives in the present, but we will make sense of it someday. Knowing historical facts about our family unit gives us glimpses of our ancestors’ relationship with God and His role in their lives. Each individual contributes to a family legacy. Let’s pray God empowers us to conduct our lives in such a way we leave a positive, Godly legacy of endurance, faith, and actions that will reflect His love and inspire our descendents.
