Mary’s Monday Musings to Quilt Encouragement
Routine
Holidays are fun. We look forward to them and enjoy the change of pace they can bring to our lives. I’m always amazed to discover that as delightful as it is to celebrate a holiday, the return to routine is also a blessing. Babies and small children thrive on routine. Regular meals at predicable times. Dependable activities that precede established bedtimes. I suspect we adults thrive on routine as well. While celebration brings a welcomed sense of freedom from the mundane, routines bring a sense of comforting predictability. The very humdrum of our daily dailies provides a dependable anchor at the same time lending a contrast to our festivities, which adds to the appreciation and flavor when we enjoy them. Let’s thank God for our routine life and the stability it gives us.
We need both routine and festivity in our lives. As we praise God for the humdrum of our lives, let’s also ask him for the creativity to shake it up periodically with a switch-a-roo. Even small things can brighten our spirits. Try adding avocado instead of jelly to our peanut butter sandwich. What about reading an unexpected morning story in addition to the bedtime story. How about accompanying a hug with a twirl around the kitchen together? Have you ever added a drop or two of food coloring to a child’s drinking water? Make a bouquet from weeds you find on a walk. Hide a love note in your husband’s lunch. You will find little special touches bring pleasure and a touch of delight which revitalizes your outlook on your day. Thank you, God, for the special days, but thank You for the ordinary ones too. Use them both to keep us full of appreciation for our life here on earth.
