Mary’s Monday Musings to Quilt Encouragement
Soft
One of the delights of holding a newborn infant is the baby’s amazingly soft skin. Our years on this planet conspire to toughen, scar, wrinkle, and otherwise mar the skin we arrive with on earth. Doll makers have tried to replicate that pleasurable newborn feeling with only a modicum of success. Manufacturers have produced multitudes of expensive products advertised to restore skin to a semblance of what we use to have, but fail to achieve the same feel as a baby’s skin. An opportunity to lovingly stroke a newborn’s arms gives us a chance to thank our God for the way He made us. A newborn’s soft skin adapts to the conditions of this world and grows just as our skin grows to provide cover for our insides all the days of our lives.
The God who created a baby’s skin to grow with the child and adapt to the environment can also provide us with the cover we need for our inside emotions. If we ask, He can toughen us to withstand hurtful words while at the same time staying tender minded to others. He can heal the scars of wounding relationships so they don’t disfigure us. He can soothe the wrinkles of age with wisdom for our lives.
God, cover our inside emotions by helping us grow and adapt to what goes on around us in such a way that we are protected from emotional destruction. At the same time, help us function better than an expensive ointment when we pour ourselves out on others to soothe and restore the emotional damage of living.
