Starry Eyed Excitement
The younger the child, the easier to make his eyes shine with delight. Such simple things as candles on a cake, a funny noise, or a game of peek-a-boo with a small blanket makes a baby happy. A new package of crayons, reading a story aloud together, finding a person behind a chair playing hide and seek will make a toddler’s eyes twinkle. Ah, that those days would last. The older a child gets and the more experienced with the world, the larger the gestures required to elicit a happy response.
Wait. Aren’t we adults a bit like this too? What does it take to arouse a giggle in us? Are we laugh-out-loud glad to walk into a room and spot a friend? Does the exchange of a short conversation with loved ones bring us delight? We can cultivate appreciation of small joys and refuse to grow so sated with large, dynamic events, happenings and sights that our hearts forget to soar in the ordinary. God restore to us the ability of a youngster to feel noticeable delight in small interactions, short exchanges of friendship, to savor momentary sights and inhale the fragrance of the places and people surrounding us.
