Mary’s Monday Musings to Quilt Encouragement
Taste and See
The little boy turned his head and his mother’s spoonful of pureed spinach smeared his cheek instead of entering his mouth. “He won’t even try a new food,” his mother bemoaned. His older brother had the same reaction to the sweet potato that sat untouched on his plate. His mother cut a tiny piece and offered it to him.
“Just try one bite. It’s sweet. You’ll like it.” He wasn’t about to try something different.
In our own way, don’t we sometimes pull the same stunt with our heavenly Father. We don’t want to go someplace where we don’t think we’ll know anyone. Are we reluctant to enter into conversations with people who stand for different views? We resist considering a concept we haven’t heard before or talking with people who have different upbringings from ours. The scripture tells us we are in this world but not to be of the world. I take that to mean we aren’t to separate ourselves from everything, but we don’t buy into every thought or value system. In every situation, we can pray and see how the Lord wants us to proceed. Psalm 34:8 says “O taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed is the man that trusteth in him.” We can ask him for the courage to try new things, to test new ideas and to enable us to separate His truth and His desires from the world’s ways.
