The Magic of Touch
Mary’s Monday Musings to Quilt Encouragement
The Magic of Touch
We had already shared several delightful telephone conversations full of laughter and love. We exchanged Christmas cards. We laughed together. We used our words on the phone to convey love and sympathy when situations were charged with sadness. But there is nothing as special as an enthusiastic hug in person to join our hearts and souls in times of change.
Skyped smiles lift our spirits. Well selected words can encourage us and feed our souls, but whenever it is possible, nothing can take the place of physical touch that reassures our visceral beings. To exchange a hug is worth making the effort to walk, drive, or even fly in times of life changing events to be within physical touch. The clasping of hands, the meeting of eyes filled with tears or gladness is like medicine to the soul. The sharing of a hug reminds our flesh that someone cares. Hugs carry the power to reassure us, to fill us with joy, to convey the gambit from casual affection all the way to over-the-top caring. Weddings and funerals are times especially charged with high emotions when life will forever be different because of the event. When it is possible to share these occasions in person, it is worth the sacrifice of time and money to bring the blessing of hugs, hand touching, face to face exchange of emotion. We can pour out great pitchers of love into those around us whenever we are involved face to face. Remember to pray about the possibility of physical presence for events whether it be a baby dedication, a graduation, a gift-giving shower or the major events of weddings or funerals. Let’s consult with God to see if it is possible to attend. If not, let’s ask Him to help us convey our interest and caring in the next best a way to bless those involved.
