Under Construction

Under Construction
The road that provides access to my neighborhood is under construction. It’s been under construction for months and months and months. During this time, the road has developed lots of potholes and uneven surfaces. The intersection which leads to a new bridge over the railroad carries one construction truck after another, requiring waits and one way traffic. Many times when I turn out of my neighborhood I find a dutiful worker holding up a stop sign to allow traffic from the opposite direction to use the road. Waiting for the oncoming traffic gives me time to reflect. Isn’t my life a bit like this? I’ve been under construction for years and years. Sometimes God holds up the traffic of my life so I can proceed without danger from oncoming busyness, and sometimes I’m the one who needs to stop and wait for God to direct me. I’m so grateful for the grace of family and friends who patiently wait while I’m slowly constructed to better represent Christ. I’m thankful for people who overlook the potholes and the uneven pavement of my character.
When the man who holds the stop sign turns the sign from stop to slow, I like to smile and wave at him to acknowledge his important role. Instead of impatience, let’s put on a smile and a figurative wave at one another because we are all under construction in our spiritual walk one way or another. Sometimes our progress toward Christ-likeness is marked with potholes. Patience is a fruit of the spirit. We can stop and show grace while we wait for God to set the pace for each of us to grow in our walk with Him. Thank you, God, that you are still working in my life. Thank you that others are patient while my spiritual development is under construction. Grant each of us patience with one another.
