Words

“Pleasant words are as a honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.” No, it’s not an advertisement for a delicious Frappuccino to convince you that it is full of calcium as well as sweet with honey. It does reflect a deep longing of our souls to experience pleasant words in our lives. This is really a Bible verse. Proverbs 16:24. A student of history can point to many times in the world when people were too quick to speak harshly of others. In a day and time when insults fly, criticism reigns, and judgements are harsh, the idea of hearing pleasant words sounds delightful.

When we long for something, we are wise to start with a look at ourselves. What kind of words fall from our mouths? If we are honest, we realize we sometimes are disappointed with ourselves and what we have said. Let’s pray we practice speaking kindly and with self-control so that what we say is seasoned with thoughtfulness and full of truth spoken with grace. Let’s be a part of the solution. We may not change the world, but we can refresh that little sphere around us with words of kindness and grace.
